Small Monuments to Uncertainty

MFA student Florin Ungureanu displays his collection of work in The Gallery

"The death of God means that there is no power in the world that could be perceived as being infinitely more powerful than any other." (Art Power, Boris Groys).

Romanian born artist, Florin Ungureanu, cites his work in a post-communist domain. Questioning power structures, issues of identity and notions of the "other", he presents us with 'Small Monuments to Uncertainty'.

circular and elliptical canvases, representative of an all seeing eye, provide glimpses into Ungureanu's world of ambiguous imagery. Combined with his small sculptural pieces, we are left questioning whether he is providing us with post-communist detritus or postcards from a brave new world.

Ungureanu says that through using this ambiguity combined with humour and irony, he is interested in exploring "how they influence beliefs and perceptions, further exploring the need for uncertainty and the metaphysical loneliness of the human being."

"If man knew the future, he would not have to choose and would not ct. He would be like an automaton, reacting to stimuli without any will of his own." (Human Action, Ludwig von Mises).

Unureanu is currently studying on the MFA programme.
