Event overview
Ewen Macleod (UNHCR) will speak on the current European refugee and migration crisis. Part of the Goldsmiths Migration Research Network event series.
What does the current European refugee and migration crisis tell us about the present world order? Is it a temporary phenomenon or symptomatic of a transnational public bad that requires urgent redress? The presentation will focus on the impact of emerging global trends - population growth, climate change, conflict and state fragility, and migration - on the current challenges for the global management of forced displacement. It will highlight political developments since the end of the Cold War as an explanation for the growth in internal displacement and many current protracted crises. A review of the growing phenomenon of failed, fragile and conflict affected states will suggest this is a key issue for international cooperation. It will indicate that new approaches to diplomacy, development and humanitarian intervention are urgently required to manage contemporary security and governance crises.
Ewen Macleod is currently head of the Policy Development and Evaluation Service at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Geneva. He has worked in the development and humanitarian fields for the United Nations and the European Commission (EC), holding both headquarters and field-based positions. During the course of a thirty year career he has worked on many complex humanitarian crises and emergencies in Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.
The event is part of the Goldsmiths Migration Research Network Seminar Series.
