Art Practice Areas (APAs)

The Art Practice Areas (APAs) consist of eleven teaching workshops and facilities available for art students to support and expand their practice over a variety of disciplines.

The APA’s aim to build their teaching around students' project ideas, helping them realise concepts discussed with their academic tutors and introduce them to new practices and techniques where necessary.

All APA staff are specialists in their fields, many being practising artists having years of teaching and commercial/industrial experience.

Explore the facilities available to our students below.

Graphics and time based media facilities at Goldsmiths

Graphics and Time-based Media

Our area houses two broad disciplines centred around graphics and time-based media connected by digital processes. All staff in the area have a creative practice that informs their teaching and support.

Graphics

We offer guidance and support with image manipulation (collage and photographic), vector graphics and desktop publishing. There is also support for scanning through flatbed and transparency media. We offer archival inkjet printing up to A2. We are here to support various processes that feed into fabrication across other APAs, such as preparation for large format printing, and image vectorisation.

The main areas of software support are:  Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and InDesign.

There is also general web support.

Traditional animation is supported through various techniques, such as drawn and stop-motion. This is a discipline that also crosses over to time-based processes.

Time-based Media

The main area of focus is on video production, sound recording, video editing/digital effects, post production and export to media playback. Camera and audio kits are also available to book directly from us.

Video is supported by the following software: Adobe Premiere and After Effects. Audio is supported through Audition and Ableton. 3D processes are supported through Cinema 4D and Blender.

There is a lot of interest in working with analogue media within the Art Department and we have the facilities to digitise from analogue tape, 8mm film and various photographic formats.

Stitch and fabric facilities at Goldsmiths

Stitch and fabric

Large and well equipped, this area enables students to interpret and express stitch and fabric concepts in a variety of ways.

Students are invited to use a wide range of machine embroidery processes including three dimensional work, pleating, dissolvable fabrics, pattern cutting and sculpting to create a range of interesting forms.

Equipment and facilities

The machine laboratory is equipped with a range of traditional, computer-aided and portable sewing technology. In addition to the Bernina and Singer-Irish industrial sewing machines, there are facilities for working with heavier fabrics like those used in upholstery as well as specialised techniques such as blind stitching, fabric over locking, smocking and tufting.
