As part of Oliver Coates' 'Deep Minimalism' festival, Daphne Oram’s groundbreaking 1949 work ‘Still Point’ will be premiered on 24 June by the London Contemporary Orchestra.
Over the last year the artists Shiva Feshareki and James Bulley have been extensively researching within the Daphne Oram Archive at Goldsmiths, University of London in order to realise a world premiere performance of ‘Still Point’ using the remaining fragments of score and performance notes left on Oram’s death (the final score has since been lost).
A restorative method has been used to orchestrate the piece, transcribing materials based on the remaining draft pages and wherever possible following Oram’s exact notation. The turntable part is composed by Feshareki based on her own intuition and understanding of Oram’s musical aesthetic referring to Oram’s notes about the manipulation techniques as transcribed by Hugh Davies in an interview by Davies recorded towards the end of Oram’s life.
‘Still Point’ predates the work of an entire generation of composers and artists in its radical use of live electronics, including turntable manipulation and sampling with live orchestra. It is one of the earliest known examples of a work for turntables and orchestra.
The orchestra will be rehearsing in Goldsmiths' Great Hall on Wednesday 22 and Thursday 23 June.
