Henriette Barthes: In Reference To
July 27, 2016 6-9pm
First Performance in the UK by Berlin based artist Lars Hering.
Hosted by PANDO@EnclaveLab
50 Resolution Way, SE8 4AL
Lars Hering explores interdisciplinary art and curatorial practices that materialize through text, performance and experimental methods of display. After reading Roland Barthes’s Camera Lucida, Hering became intrigued by the withheld photograph of Barthes’ mother, which, having never been exposed, exists nonetheless as a subjective imagining in the reader’s mind. Following interviews Hering conducted with international Barthes experts, the descriptions were written in a conversational format. In his work 'Henriette Barthes: In reference to... (2015)', Hering staged a dinner in which guests were invited to read subjective descriptions of the image. Through this staged discussion a spoken image of Barthes’ mother emerged.
PANDO intends to re-enact this dinner once more, but with a set of computers sitting around a table hosting invited proxies. These proxies are collectives such as FormContent and VS VS VS. Situated only virtually in the room, each proxy reads sections of the text as spectators observe from the periphery while eating from a provided buffet. The rhetorical performance becomes a proxy of the dicourse between experts, furthering the description from thing and amassing subjective readings to an unknown effect.
Lars Hering considers the performance as representing a possible strategy to circumvent concealment. Spoken-word is a medium, which can be memorized – in this case by both audience and participants. There is no censorship for memory, which means there is limited censorship for the ekphrasis. Creating a mental image through words does not depend on any storage, database or archive. This connects to current issues within the Digital Age, considering we live in a time where storage is taking over the importance of memory.
