It’s a tradition at Goldsmiths that all students in the Department begin the year with a week of intensive performance based activities that culminate in public concerts.
This afternoon and evening mini-festival features students on the BMus Music, BMus Popular Music and BMus/BSc Music Computing programmes.
Students on the BMus Music programme will work on pieces under the theme “Anniversaries” in the Great Hall, and will be performing music by Steve Reich (who turns 80 on 3 October), John White (who also turns 80 this year), Vaughan Williams 'Serenade to Music' (the text is an adaptation of the discussion about music and the music of the spheres from The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare), Ginastera 'Four Dances’ (Ginastera would’ve been 100 this year), Carla Bley (another one who turns 80 this year!) and Beethoven’s overture to the play Coriolanus (Coriolan Overture).
We will also include 4 Sonic Shorts: electroacoustic compositions by Music Computing students. Each piece is composed entirely from recordings collected around the River Thames on Friday 23rd September, processed and edited. The compositions consider the theme of "fire" and the 350th anniversary of the Great Fire of London.
Students on the BMus Popular Music programme will have their performance of new devised works following the Sinfonia, Chorus, Jazz Band and Keyboard Collective event from 7pm. 1st and 2nd year students will perform on the front entrance steps outside the main building on our bespoke festival stage, whilst 3rd year performances involve installations and multimedia works created in our state-of-the-art recording studio, with live events at 310 NXRD during the week.
