Goldsmiths undergraduate reads her work on Radio 4's Book of the Week
'The Good Immigrant' is collection of essays, edited by Nikesh Shukla, in which writers explore what it means to be Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic in Britain today. Varaidzo is a third year Media & English undergraduate Goldsmiths (using her pen name here) and the youngest writer in the collection.
In this essay, she asks how do you learn to care for your black hair when you are growing up under the wing of a white mother? Is it ever OK to join in the chorus of a Kanye West song featuring the n-word? What is performative about blackness? Varaidzo examines the duality of being black and also being mixed race. She grew up in Somerset and is now a freelance writer and editor at gal-dem, as well as studying at Goldsmiths.
The music used in the programme is Englistan by the actor and rapper Riz Ahmed, whose essay Airports and Auditions also features in the collection, The Good Immigrant.
