Event overview
We welcome Mercury Prize, MOBO & BRIT Award nominated artist Jessie Ware to Goldsmiths to give this afternoon's free talk.
Jessie Ware's debut album, Devotion, was recorded with little fanfare in low-key sessions with Dave Okumu of The Invisible. It became one of the most critically acclaimed albums of 2012, lauded by everyone from Pitchfork to Heat Magazine and nominated for the Mercury Prize. Plaudits were followed by an ever-expanding fanbase, meaning Ware was constantly on tour as she gained millions of new devotees from across the world. Those new fans included the biggest stars in the world, with everyone from Katy Perry to Taylor Swift piling on the praise.
"Tough Love" was the first single to be taken from the new album, airing for the first time on BBC Radio 1 as "Hottest Record" during the Zane Lowe's show in 2014. "Tough Love" was compared to "Prince at his minimalist '80s best" by Pitchfork, who interviewed Ware prior to the release.
She has been nominated for the Mercury Prize, MOBO Awards, BRIT Awards and won the South Bank Sky Arts Award for best album (for Devotion).
All welcome to attend this free public lecture, but priority will be given to students on the Popular Music course.
