Event overview
Lu Spinney and Janice Warman on memoir, loss and life writing as a force for change
Lu Spinney is a recent graduate of the Goldsmith’s MA in Creative and Life Writing, who has worked as a journalist and an interior decorator. Her first book, Beyond the High Blue Air, is a memoir about her son Miles who at 29 suffered a devastating head injury and was left in a coma. Her book explores her family’s anguish as they come to realise that, although Miles has been saved from death, he has not been brought back to a meaningful life. A reflection on the current dilemma about the right to die, it has been described as a ‘profoundly moving and grippingly readable book [that] brings to mind The Diving Bell and the Butterfly’ (Sunday Times).
Janice Warman’s journalistic career spans the BBC, Financial Times, Guardian, Observer and Spectator. Her most recent books include a young adult novel about a young boy growing up during the 1976 Soweto uprising, The World Beneath (Walker Books 2014), and Class of 79, the story of three of her fellow journalism students who risked their lives to destroy apartheid (Jacana, 2014). She is currently doing a PhD in creative writing at Goldsmiths and working on her next novel. In her talk she will reflect on those who died to end apartheid – and why democracy is not enough. Is South Africa still dying for freedom?
