Event overview
Seminar presented by guest speaker Dr Elizabeth Williams.
A seminar presented by Elizabeth Williams as part of the Anthropology Department Spring seminar series: The Politics of Embodiment.
In the past five years there has been a growing recognition that Black Britain is not so much a "new community" that arrived with the Windrush emigrants but the Black presence has been a consistent presence in the British Isles that deserves recognition and commendation for the contribution made to British public life and its transnational heritage. Ignorance of Black Britons emanates from the schoolroom to the academy, to the broad room and beyond. The recent growth of research into Black British life has started to dispel this ignorance. Elizabeth Williams through her writing and research adds new knowledge to the narrative of Britain's relationship with South Africa. The solidarity of Black Britain has has often been overlooked as part of the anti-apartheid solidarity movement of the late 20th century. Come and listen to reflections on this reemerging history within the broader context of diversity of knowledge production in the Academy.
