Event overview
Goldsmiths Writers’ Centre presents Ros Barber and Suzanne Joinson talking about their recent novels, and how to survive as a writer
Ros Barber is a poet and novelist, who teaches creative writing at Goldsmiths and whose book The Marlowe Papers (2012) won the Desmond Elliott Prize. Her second novel Devotion, shortlisted for the Encore Prize 2015, was described as 'compelling' by both the Guardian and Independent; the TLS praised its 'intelligent poetic writing'. Set in the future where there are moves to have religious fundamentalism classified as a mental illness, the novel explores grief, madness, and faith, and just a little quantum physics.
Suzanne Joinson is an award-winning writer of fiction and non-fiction whose work has appeared in, among other places, the New York Times, Guardian, Independent on Sunday, Aeon, Vogue and Lonely Planet collections of travel writing. Her first novel A Lady Cyclist's Guide to Kashgar was translated into 16 languages and was a national bestseller in the US, and her second novel The Photographer's Wife came out in 2016, both with Bloomsbury. She is currently writer-in-residence at the Weald and Downland Museum in Sussex and will also be a visiting writer at the University of Malta for the month of Feb 2017.
The event will be followed at 6.30pm in PSH LG02 by the 2016 winner of the Goldsmiths Prize, Mike McCormack, discussing his novel Solar Bones
