Performing Iannis Xenakis’ Nomos alpha: Temporality and Interpretative Space
The CMRU is pleased to welcome cellist Alfia Nakipbekova to give this evening's lecture.
Former student of Rostropovich, Alfia Nakipbekova is an internationally acclaimed soloist, recording artist, chamber musician and pedagogue. As well as having a busy performing and teaching schedule, Alfia is currently researching the development of the cello in the 20th century at the University of Leeds.
Nomos alpha for solo cello by Iannis Xenakis is one of the most radical compositions of the second half of the twentieth century. Completed in 1966 the work is still considered a pinnacle of new cello virtuosity. In her lecture-recital, Nakipbekova will discuss the issues pertaining to the temporality and structure of the composition – from the performance perspective, and her approaches to the interpretation and the ‘extreme’ techniques demanded by the work. In this context, Alfia will investigate the relationship between sound and silence: in her live rendition of Nomos alpha she will focus on performing the silences, articulating the ruptures occurring within and between the ‘events’ and at the (dis)connecting intersections between the two Paths – the two main elements of the structure that perpetuate the dislocation of time.
Free and all welcome
