A Challenging Spark, Part 2
In a Challenging Spark, Part 2, building on her continuing focus with chance and accidents, Chavez will expand on how the power of being met with a struggle can help dictate the evolution of one's sound art practice.

Born in Lima, Peru and based in NYC, Maria Chávez is best known as an abstract turntablist, sound artist and DJ.
Accidents, coincidence and failures are themes that unite her sound sculptures, installations and other works with her improvised solo turntable performance practice.
She was chosen to be a composer fellow with the Civitella Ranieri Foundation in Umbertide, Italy, is currently a research fellow with the Sound Practice Research Department of Goldsmith’s University of London and in an arts fellow with the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation.
She was an artist in residence with CEC Artslink in St. Petersburg, Russia, has presented sound installation and performance works for the JUDD Foundation (Marfa, Texas) and presented a new sound piece for Every Time A Ear di Soun, a documenta 14 radio program, on air from April 8 to September 17, 2017.
This fall, Maria will present a new sound performancefor the Getty Museum as part of PST LA LA and will be artist in residence at the Royal Academy of Music, Aarhus/Aalborg, Denmark.
As a DJ, Maria has shared her expansive music collection alongside iconic electronic musicians and DJ’s like; Simian Mobile Disco, Demdike Stare and Regis. She has DJ'd all over the world, most recently in Moscow (Dewars Powerhouse), Lisbon (Galerie ZDB) and Istanbul (Pendor Corner).
