Gender and Language in Prime Minister’s Questions Time exchanges in the House of Commons
Speaker: Dr Sylvia Shaw, University of Westminster
Prime Ministers have often called to eliminate the ‘Punch and Judy’ aspects of Prime Minister’s Questions Time sessions (PMQs) in the House of Commons. However, it remains a highly adversarial event in which personal attacks on opponents are common. In this talk I use detailed transcripts taken from video recordings of PMQs to examine some of the exchanges between Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn (2016-2017). I comment on the ways in which it can be claimed that both leaders confound gendered stereotypes relating to speaking in adversarial forums and identify some of the linguistic strategies they use to construct their political positions.
