On the way home from his most recent trip to Mexico, sonic artist and acoustic ecologist, Rob Mackay will drop in to Goldsmiths to discuss his project, Flight of the Monarchs.
Flight of the Monarchs is an immersive sound and video installation inspired by the incredible journey that the Monarch Butterfly takes each year from Canada to Mexico. Combining video and sound footage recorded in the El Rosario reserve in Michoacan with flute and Mexican poetry, this explores the resilience of this beautiful creature in the face of climate change.

The project has continued with a recent visit to the Cerro Pelón colony, installing a a streambox (developed by SoundCamp) which broadcasts the sounds of the reserve over the internet. A number of music and poetry collaborations have developed, including musical performances amongst the butterflies.
Dr Robert Mackay is a Senior Lecturer in Music at the University of Hull.
Presented by Goldsmiths' Soundscapes Special Interest Group and the Unit for Sound Practice Research
