Communities that took part in the recent mining conflict of Mallku Quta in the Bolivian Andes, have reproduced the fetish of moral government since the 18th century. Then, indigenous rebels evoked the Spanish king to justify their actions against landlord abuses. Spanish kings and present-day presidents are expected to behave like just yet distant government. However, Bolivia’s current president Evo Morales got actively involved in Mallku Quta’s conflict ‘nationalizing’ a Canadian mining firm and militarizing the region. People have started addressing him as ‘big landlord Evo’ expressing a cultural disposition, or model, with historical connotations of authority and reciprocity that differ markedly from remote government. This experiential shift shows a fractured cultural ethos at work when Andean farmers face global challenges such as transnational mining.
