Event overview
With Rajindra Puri, University of Kent, part of Anthropology of the Anthropocene seminar series.
In this presentation, Raj Puri describes anthropological and ethnobiological research conducted in the forested hills of southern Karnataka among Soliga and Lingayat farmers who are learning about and responding to various environmental changes thought to be, in part, driven by climate change. Variable monsoon seasons, prolonged droughts and generally unpredictable weather are identified as influential changes, which are in turn driving changes in biodiversity, such as the invasion of the shrub Lantana camara. Lantana turns out to be one of several factors, some of which are social and cultural, implicated in the decline of cattle husbandry as a key livelihood activity, with repercussions for ecological and cultural aspects of life in these communities. The research also explores methodological issues such as determining responses to change and their causes in the context of a dynamic complex social-ecological system.
