PhD student Paul Kean presents a programme of minimalist keyboard masterpieces, including a rare memorized performance of John Adams’ Phrygian Gates for piano, and a solo rendition of Steve Reich’s groundbreaking two-piano work Piano Phase.
Paul Kean is a contemporary classical pianist based in Glasgow and a PhD researcher at Goldsmiths, University of London. He has been working with musicologist Keith Potter and pianist & pedagogue Andrew Zolinsky on his primary research and repertoire interest – American minimalist piano music. As a soloist Paul has an extensive contemporary repertoire, and has performed works by composers such as John Cage, La Monte Young, Terry Riley, Steve Reich, Philip Glass, John Adams, Frederic Rzewski and Graham Fitkin. Paul is also a member of UK six-piano contemporary music ensemble Piano Circus and has performed with the group across the UK, Europe and the United States. Most notably, in 2016 Paul became the first person in the UK to perform the solo version of Steve Reich’s groundbreaking two-piano work Piano Phase. As a scholar, Paul has presented his research on the music of Steve Reich at conferences both nationally and internationally.
