Event overview
engagée Journal for political theory, activism, and art will launch its first international double issue on "Radical Cities".
Can politics in cities, including in Corbyn’s Labour Party, come together to facilitate potent collectivities through an explicit commitment to radical democracy?
engagée Journal for political theory, activism, and art will launch its first international double issue on "Radical Cities". We will discuss what rebel cities have to do with radical democracy, and to what extent municipal movements challenge the traditional notion of democracy, power and social change.
With:
- Members of Plan C London Radical Municipalism Cluster
- Rosemary Bechler (openDemocracy/DiEM25 London)
- Jeremy Gilbert (University of East London)
- Marina Prentoulis (Another Europe Is Possible/University of East Anglia)
- Rahel Sophia Süß and Alessio Kolioulis (engagée)
In particular, we will ask:
- To what extent municipal movements challenge the way of ‘doing politics’ today?
- Looking at the concrete examples of neo-municipalist movements, how new democratic practices and institutions are evolving?
- What is the role of movement parties for progressive municipal politics?
- In which sense (transnational) parties, movements and platforms are challenging democratic politics today?
- How can radical municipalism look like in the UK?

engagée is a collectively edited and self-published Journal for political theory, activism and art, promoting emancipatory practices and philosophical interventions.
Our aim is to foster and promote philosophical work that intends to make a constructive contribution to current political and social problems. It does so by going beyond conventional academic formats, avoiding a theory/practice divide and collecting different forms of contributions such as philosophical essays, literature and socially engaged art.
