Lecture to celebrate the launch of Dublin's Great Wars: The First World War, the Easter Rising and the Irish Revolution by Prof. Richard Grayson
Professor Richard Grayson of the Department of History at Goldsmiths will explore stories of Dubliners who fought in the British military and in republican forces during the First World War and the Irish Revolution. In this book launch and talk, Richard Grayson links these conflicts, usually narrated as separate stories, arguing that they should be considered a series of interconnected ‘Great Wars’.
He will explain how Irish nationalist support for Britain going to war in 1914 can only be understood in the context of the political fight for Irish independence and why so many Dubliners were hostile to the Easter Rising. He will examine Dublin loyalism and how the militarisation of Irish society and the earlier experiences of veterans of the British Army helped to shape the War of Independence and the Irish Civil War.
There will be a book sale and signing after the talk.
