Surprises along the idea journey: Uncovering the role of ‘creative jolts’ during the formation of digital business models & social mission
In this talk, Dr Tuukka Toivonen (UCL, International University of Japan) will share the main emerging findings from an ESRC Transformative Grant research project he has been leading from mid-2016 onwards. The project focuses on feedback interactions that generate affective shocks and major idea alterations along the journeys of early-stage entrepreneurs in London.

Tuukka Toivonen (born in Helsinki, educated in Japan and the UK) is an expert on creativity in entrepreneurship, collaborative spaces, teams and social innovation. Having gained a PhD from the University of Oxford in 2009, Tuukka worked primarily in global academia for a decade, becoming Senior Lecturer in Social and Economic Innovation at UCL in 2016. He maintains links to several leading academic institutions and holds associate professor-level appointments at STEaPP, University College London and GLOCOM, International University of Japan.
In June 2018, Tuukka published an in-depth report on the creative process in coworking with Professor Carsten Sorensen of the LSE (please see http://www.creativefriction.xyz). He is due to publish another report on the creative process in social innovation competitions with SITRA, the Finnish social innovation fund. In parallel with this work, Tuukka and his teams are preparing a series of new academic papers for top management journals.
Tuukka’s empirical creativity research has been funded by the ESRC, the Skoll Foundation, think tanks as well as several university funds. He draws inspiration from a prior life in music, from fashion and design, sustainable life-styles, Japanese culture, as well as life in Hackney. Tuukka regularly mentors social entrepreneurs as well as graduate students.
