Event overview
As part of the London Jazz Festival and hosted by the Contemporary Music Research Unit, we welcome the LIO to Deptford Town Hall.
21 years on from their first performances with Butch Morris, LIO explore the challenge of large-scale group improvisation in the Grade II-listed Council Chamber.
London Improvisers Orchestra’s roots date back to 1997 with the Contemporary Music Network UK tour by the “London Skyscraper” ensemble conducted by the late and much-missed Lawrence ‘Butch' Morris. In 1998 the LIO started playing regular gigs and twenty years later is still facing up to the challenge of large-scale group improvisation, free, devised and conducted. The orchestra draws on a large and shifting pool of free improvising musicians from London and beyond. Currently in residency at the Iklectik in Waterloo, a double CD of live performances will be released this year.
This event is free to ALL Goldsmiths students and staff - bring your ID card for entry.
