Event overview
With Lisa Appignanesi and Nell Stevens
Lisa’s memoir Everyday Madness explores her grief and anger after the sudden death of her husband John; Nell’s memoir tells a story of thwarted love – both her own and Mrs Gaskell’s. They discuss the challenges of taking highly personal material into the public domain.
Lisa Appignanesi was born in postwar Poland and grew up in Paris and Montreal before moving to Britain in her twenties. Her many prize-winning books, both and fiction and non-fiction, include Mad, Bad and Sad, Freud’s Women (with John Forrester), Losing the Dead, and Trials of Passion. She is known as a cultural commentator, writes for the New York Review of Books, and has been president of English PEN as well as chair of the Freud Museum London and of the Man Booker International Prize. She is currently chair of the Royal Society of Literature.
Nell Stevens writes memoir and fiction. She is the author of Bleaker House (2017) and Mrs Gaskell & Me (2018). Nell has a PhD in Victorian literature from King's College London and an MFA in Fiction from Boston University. She was shortlisted for this year’s BBC National Short Story Award and is a Lecturer in Creative Writing at Goldsmiths.
