Event overview
With Martin Fotta, Goethe University Frankfurt. Part of spring term seminar series.
Elaborating on a Brazilian folk distinction between ‘work’ (trabalho) and deal-making, which is associated with the impersonality of ‘the street’, Calon Gypsies of Bahia see themselves as people who ‘do not work’. Calon conceptualisation of economic activities is based on an equation between work and physical exertion, but it is not a mere inversion of the dominant work ethics. Rather, I will argue that their economic practices can be understood as a form of non-institutionalised householding (Gregory 2009). This form of householding is integrated into the market but is characterised by values specific to it. I will further suggest that this model can be used to account for Roma/Gypsy integration into local economies elsewhere, without sidestepping the historical and regional variations.
