A short talk and screening of the film, "Hanoi Eclipse: The Music of Dai Lam Linh" by Dr Barley Norton
Audiovisual representations of music practices by ethnomusicologists have proliferated in the digital age, yet the role of filmmaking in music research has received little attention. Moving beyond an understanding of film/video as visual ‘data’ or ‘evidence’ separate from the writing of theory, this seminar considers the potential for theoretical arguments concerning music and culture to be explored through filmmaking practices. During the talk, Dr Norton will discuss the film he made about the experimental music scene in Vietnam. The seminar will include a full screening of the film, Hanoi Eclipse: The Music of Dai Lam Linh (56 minutes).
Barley Norton is a Reader and head of the Asian Music Unit (AsMU) in the Music Department at Goldsmiths.
The Music Research Series is designed to help postgraduate students advance their research and careers. The events stimulate exchange, hones skills, facilitates the creation of professional networks and helps to consolidate the department’s postgraduate community, all over a glass of wine! Attendance is strongly recommended for all postgraduate students (MA, MMus and PGR) in Music but of course undergraduates, music researchers, and visitors from across the college and the community are also most welcome to these public lectures.
