Event overview
Let Us Learn are having their second parliamentary event on 6th March 2019, hosted in parliament by Rt.Hon Stuart McDonald.
Please come along and hear why an urgent rethink is needed to avoid a second Windrush-style scandal - and what you can do to help!
As young migrants who have grown up in the UK, many young people are required to pay regular fees to the Home Office in order to maintain our lawful immigration status. Since 2014, the cost has gone up from £601 to £2,033, with another rise in Home Office fees expected in April 2019. The cost has become too high for many to afford.
The parliamentary event will create an open dialogue between parliamentarians and young migrants who have to navigate a complex and costly immigration system. The Windrush Scandal has highlighted that wholescale immigration reform is necessary to prevent yet another generation from being exposed to the policies of the hostile environment. Members of Let Us Learn have stated that by ignoring spiralling Home Office fees, the government are sowing the seeds for another scandal.
Let Us Learn are calling for:
* An immediate freeze on further fee increases!
* An urgent review into how the 'leave to remain' process can be made fairer and more affordable!
In early 2018, immigration minister Caroline Nokes MP agreed she would meet Let Us Learn. A Year later, she has not made good on that promise, and fees have continued to spiral to increasingly unaffordable levels.
Attend the parliamentary event to hear from panelists and young people with first hand experience of the UK's immigration system. You will also be able to add your name to a giant-size invitation that will later be delivered to Ms Nokes, asking her to hold a meeting with Let Us Learn.
Speakers include:
- Rt. Hon Stuart McDonald- Scottish Member of Parliament for Cumberland, Kilsyth and Kirkintillock East
- Ryan Shorthouse – Founder and Chief Executive of Bright Blue an independent think tank and pressure group for liberal conservatism.
- Ijeoma Moore- Young Activist with lived experience of the UK immigration system.
- Amanda Weston QC - at Garden Court Chambers practising across a wide range of public and administrative law fields with an emphasis on civil liberties and vulnerable client groups.
- Dajay Brown- Actor, former student of Brit School, who will be performing a piece on his experience and journey to getting citizenship in the UK.
We invite you to come along, it is a chance to meet with our young people and get involved in the interactive session.
The event is a collaboration between Let Us Learn and Goldsmiths' PhD student Vanessa Hughes (Sociology) who is researching the impacts of immigration status and the immigration regime on young people who have lived most of their life in the UK.
