Event overview
With Emma Darwin and Robert Fraser
Emma Darwin made her reputation as a historical novelist and Robert Fraser as a biographer. But both have changed direction in their latest books, Emma to journey through the history of her family, Robert to describe the moral dilemmas he faced when his wife’s existence lay in the balance. They discuss the challenges of their genre-bending
new work.
Emma Darwin is the great-great-granddaughter of Charles Darwin and his wife Emma Wedgwood. She is the author of two historical novels: The Mathematics of Love (2006) and A Secret Alchemy (2009), while her non-fiction book Get Started In Writing Historical Fiction was published in 2016. She has a PhD in Creative Writing from Goldsmiths, and is a creative writing mentor and tutor with a hugely popular blog, This Itch of Writing. This is Not a Book about Charles Darwin was published last month.
Robert Fraser’s biography of the poet George Barker was a Spectator book of the year; his life of the poet David Gascoyne topped the Independent's list of new biographies. He has also published books about Marcel Proust, the anthropologist Sir James Frazer, and the print history of Africa and India. He is Professor Emeritus at the Open University and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, the English Association and the Royal
Asiatic Society. Pascal’s Tears, or How Not to Murder One’s Wife was published last autumn.
