Event overview
Multicultural London English: Innovation, actuation, transmission and evaluation
Dr Susan Fox (University of Bern) will be discussing her research on Multicultrual London English:
'Recent years have seen the emergence of a new type of contact variety, so-called multiethnolects, which have their origins in the mixed multicultural neighbourhoods of urban centres with large immigrant populations. In this session we will explore the emergence of one such variety, Multicultural London English (MLE), and we will consider the sociohistorical factors that can account for why and how it has arisen. We will look at some of its characteristics as well as who speaks it. The session will also include results from a survey which has investigated attitudes towards the variety.'
This seminar is taking place as part of the MA in Sociocultural Linguistics but is open to all staff and students.
