Contemporary Music Research Unit presents an evening concert by the Nine Trio, performing pages 115 - 126 from Cornelius Cardew's 'Treatise'.
Indeterminacy in music loosens the composer’s control, thereby expanding the performer’s role and licensing greater-than-normal degrees of legitimate variation between renditions. Even so, this music is rarely presented in ways that highlight these features. The 'Treatise' Project aims to address this gap by bringing together differing interpretations of the same excerpt from Cornelius Cardew’s monumental graphic score 'Treatise'.
The Treatise Project will unfold in a series of events spanning the entire length of the Summer term. This evening’s performance by Nine Trio is the first in a series of six concerts. The first five concerts in the series feature a soloist or ensemble performing the selected pages from 'Treatise' alongside other materials. The series will conclude on the last day of term (21 June) with a concert in which all five performances of the same 'Treatise' excerpt plus a sixth by guests The Ligeti Quartet are presented one after another.
