Event overview
This is the first playtest of an interactive instrument in development by Sandro Giacometti (UWL), developed in response to recordings included on the Voyager 1 & 2 NASA probes.
This is the first playtest of an interactive instrument in development by Sandro Giacometti (UWL). It is controlled by data gathered in real-time from an EEG headband worn by a performer, allowing them to interact with their own accompaniment fluidly. The session will begin with an open mic, where anyone is free to experiment with the instrument (alongside their own) and discuss development; this will be followed by a series of brief performances prepared earlier in the day.
The instrument is developed in response to the recording of Ann Druyan's EEG readings included on the Golden Records carried by NASA probes Voyager 1 and 2, launched in 1977. The probes are the first human-made objects to reach interstellar space. The instrument and the Voyager project are the are the framework for a music theatre piece in development by James Creed.
"The spacecraft will be encountered and the record played only if there are advanced spacefaring civilizations in interstellar space. But the launching of this bottle into the cosmic ocean says something very hopeful about life on this planet." - Carl Sagan
"This is a present from a small, distant world, a token of our sounds, our science, our images, our music, our thoughts and our feelings. We are attempting to survive our time so we may live into yours." - President Jimmy Carter
