Event overview
with Audrey Allwood, Goldsmiths, University of London Part of the Anthropology spring term seminar series (Cancelled)
I am ‘old but not cold’, is a common remark amongst Caribbean migrants with reference to remaining sprightly, although they have grown into an elderly age. Caribbean migrants from the ‘Windrush’ era of migration settled in Brixton and formed a distinct community, with many living there for decades. Their long term residency in Brixton has left a legacy. However, Brixton has changed since they moved there with significant gentrification continuously reshaping the area. Similarly, the hopes and dreams of the migrants have also changed.
This paper explores how the ‘elderly’ phase in the life cycle is conceptualised, and lived for the Caribbean elders. In particular, exploring the different ways they interpret their elderly status as residents of a sheltered housing scheme in Brixton.
