Event overview
Presented by the Centre for Queer History and Curzon Goldsmiths
'Cruising' has been the subject of ardent debate since it was first released in US cinemas in 1980.
Produced in the wake of gay liberation and before the onset of the AIDS crisis, 'Cruising' documents a particular historical moment.
Even when it was still just in development, the likes of Larry Kramer and the wider gay liberation movement organised against what they perceived to be a vile, anti-gay smear job.
But how does Cruising hold up forty years later?
A psychopath is scouring New York City gay clubs and viciously slaughtering gay men. Detective Steve Burns (Al Pacino) is ordered to don leather, hang at the city’s S&M joints and, in deep cover, try to track down the killer. But the more that Steve becomes immersed in the subculture, the more that lines become blurred.
