Talking Textiles is a get-together for anybody interested in textiles and curious to find out more about the Goldsmiths Textile Collection.
Christine Risley (1926-2003) grew up in Richmond and Lewisham, winning a scholarship to Prendergast School, Lewisham and then studying Art and Craft (1944) followed by an Art Teacher’s Diploma (1949) at Goldsmiths. In addition to following a career as an artist and Designer, she returned to Goldsmiths to teach from the late 1950's until the late 1980's. Most notably, she established the Machine Embroidery Department under Constance Howard and authored several books on the subject.
This session is an opportunity to explore an undocumented part of her personal collection and discuss what it might tell us about Risley’s approach to her practice as an Artist, Designer, Teacher and Author.
