Event overview
Shawnea presents Interactional Resources and challenges for patient-provider communication using English as Lingua France (ELF)
Along with global migration, ELF medical encounters where medical service providers and seekers not sharing the same first language resolve to use English as a common language to communicate is becoming more common, especially in big cities. How such interaction is conducted in Hong Kong is however little explored. Using interview data with 20 doctors and nurses from Hong Kong, the current presentation focuses on these participants’ experiences in communicating with medical service seekers in ELF, particularly about the verbal and non-verbal strategies and multimodal resources that they use, and the challenges that they face.
