GoldLingS Research Talks Series
Masculinity and homosociality are two crucial components of men’s talk, especially in the practice of storytelling (Coates, 2003; Kiesling, 2005; Lawson, 2013, 2018). In my presentation, I will first show how I use linguistic ethnography as my research approach to collect data from Chinese male friendship groups. I will then present a collection of stories to demonstrate how Chinese young men in my research use narratives to construct and perform their identities. Through the analysis of the narratives, the concept of ‘dominant discourses of masculinity’ are unpacked, (re)negotiated and defined in its specific socio-cultural context. Finally, I shall argue that the linguistic perspective of the closer examination of the structural characteristics of those conversational narratives would provide a more holistic and ‘natural’ picture on how men use storytelling in their every life as a social practice to exert their hegemonic male identities and masculinities.
