What would it mean to depose the police? An exploration of the violence of the contemporary French state in light of Walter Benjamin's Toward the Critique of Violence.
Walter Benjamin's Toward the Critique of Violence is never cited in Elsa Dorlin's book Se défendre (2017), and yet this reference is there as a foundation, an inaugural starting point: as a fictitious dialogue between Walter Benjamin (and Sorel) and Frantz Fanon. In this presentation, Dorlin will unfold this silent reference and extend the reflections of Se défendre by attempting to write what could be the last "missing" chapter of the book. A ghost chapter on the present, on the immediate reality which the book had deliberately kept at a distance, so difficult is it to think when our thoughts are glued to the present. At the crossroads of the present, we find Benjamin facing the democratic state, its police and their founding or constitutive violence; we find the French State and its police and the question: how to depose them?
