Goldsmiths Writers' Centre presents...Family, trauma and the power of the natural world
Kate Nicholls left England to raise her five children in Botswana: living in a lion conservation camp, she home-schooled her family while they all learned at first-hand about the lifecycles and behaviour of wild lions.
Trauma entered their lives when Kate was sexually assaulted. Under the Camelthorn Tree is a vivid, unsentimental memoir striking in its honesty, and its account of how the children of parents with PTSD can suffer collateral damage. Featherhood tells the story of a love affair between a man and a magpie: a bird that fell from its nest in a Bermondsey junkyard and into Charlie Gilmour's life.
It’s about the jackdaw kept at a Cornish stately home by Heathcote Williams — anarchist, poet, magician, stealer of Christmas; it’s about Charlie's biological father who vanished from his life in the dead of night. These are books of beauty, grace and candor.
