What can transformative justice practitioners and scholars working in contexts of “peace” and “conflict” learn from each other?
Transformative justice is an emerging response to questions of sexual violence – whether perpetrated in armed conflict or in “peacetime”. However, the concept of transformative justice looks quite different in these two contexts.
In the context of “peaceful” societies, transformative justice is most often linked to questions of police defunding and prison abolition. In the context of societies transitioning from armed conflict, the call to abolition has been less prominent, focusing on the integration of social and political justice into transitional justice and international criminal justice practices.
This seminar explores ideas of transformative justice emerging from two different contexts - the UK and post-conflict Bosnia and Herzegovina - asking what scholars and practitioners working in these different contexts can learn from each other.

Molly Ackhurst has a practice-based background having worked in sexual violence support for many years. She currently works as an activist/writer/facilitator/academic specialising in creative transformative approaches to trauma and justice. Anousheh Haghdadi is a PhD candidate at Goldsmiths, University of London. Her research explores the “social life” of testimony to conflict-related sexual violence, asking under what conditions testimony can contribute to transforming gender relations in post-conflict Bosnia and Herzegovina.
