Event overview
Join Professor Michaela Benson and Aditi Anand (Migration Museum) as they reflect on their collaboration for the Migration Museum’s Departures Exhibition.
As part of the Social and Economic Justice research stream, this series of events invites Goldsmiths researchers and the organisations with whom they have worked to reflect on their partnerships.
What can public engagement look like in respect to research on social and economic justice? What are the different ways of doing it? What can academic researchers and public organisations offer one other? How can we form equitable and respectful partnerships?
Bringing the researcher and the partner into conversation, the sessions will focus on developing productive, mutually beneficial, and equitable partnerships; sharing skills, knowledge, and expertise; the possibilities for public engagement informed by academic scholarship; and the opportunities for reaching different audiences through collaboration.
In this ‘In conversation with …’ session, join Professor Michaela Benson and Aditi Anand (Migration Museum) as they reflect on their collaboration for the Migration Museum’s Departures Exhibition.
Michaela Benson is a sociologist with expertise in migration, citizenship and identity. In particular, her research focusses on Britishness and belonging among Britain’s emigrants and overseas citizens at moments of major political transformation including Brexit and decolonisation. Beyond her academic publications, Michaela’s portfolio includes freelance writing for the BBC, the Telegraph and various other publications in the UK, US and Europe; the production and hosting of the podcast series 'Brexit Brits Abroad' (2017-20) and 'Who do we think we are?' (2021); and the recent installations Postcards from the British in Europe and The Interview Room included in the Migration Museum’s exhibition Departures: 400 years of British Emigration (2020-21).
Aditi Anand is the Head of Creative Content at The Migration Museum. The Migration Museum explores how the movement of people to and from Britain across the ages has shaped who we are – as individuals, as communities, and as a nation. From their current home in the heart of Lewisham Shopping Centre, we stage engaging exhibitions and dynamic events, alongside a far-reaching education programme for primary, secondary, university and adult learners. Our museum is reopening to the public in May 2021. They have a growing digital presence and convene a knowledge-sharing Migration Network of museums and galleries across the UK.
The Social and Economic Justice research stream is cross-disciplinary cohort of Goldsmiths researchers taking a collaborative approach to challenging the inequalities of the 21st century.
This event is open to staff and students at Goldsmiths.
The event will take place online via Zoom. The meeting link will be circulated ahead of the event.
