Event overview
Peter Mörtenböck & Helge Mooshammer on platform urbanism (Austrian Pavilion, 2021 Venice Biennale Architettura) and the self-organised work of the Curators Collective.
For the first time in the history of the Venice Biennale, more than 50 curators of the various national contributions have come together and established a formalised network of mutual support and dialogue: the Curators Collective (CC). In August 2021, in the days preceding the award ceremony of the Biennale Architettura 2021, the Curators Collective organised dozens of public events across collaborating national pavilions in the Giardini, Arsenale, and throughout Venice, to mark the midterm of the exhibition. This ‘Midissage’ was one aspect of the Curators Collective’s ongoing effort to fulfil the Biennale’s potential as a platform for synergistic collaboration, solidarity, and accessibility. The talk examines how the self-organised Curators Collective, the CC Midissage, the curatorial framework and institutional management of the Biennale Architettura, and the ongoing COVID-19 crisis have intersected with the programme of the Austrian Pavilion, curated by Peter Mörtenböck and Helge Mooshammer, and its focus on platform urbanism (http://www.platform-austria.org).
Biographies
Peter Mörtenböck and Helge Mooshammer are Visiting Researchers in the Department of Visual Cultures. They are the directors of the Centre for Global Architecture and the Visual Culture Department at TU Wien’s School of Architecture and Planning. Their research is focused on the architecture of the political community and the economisation of the city, as well as new forms of urban sociality in a context shaped by processes of neoliberalisation, datafication and infrastructuring. Peter and Helge’s most recent books include the edited volumes Data Publics (2020) and Platform Urbanism and Its Discontents (2021). Among other curatorial projects, they are responsible for the Austrian Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale 2021 (22 May to 21 November 2021).

This event is part of the Visual Cultures Public Programme (Autumn 2021): Curatorial Agencies
Curatorial agencies take a plethora of forms; their effects are multiple. They are always also evident in our daily dealings with the world - albeit in often-unnamed ways and in ways that require critical evaluation and different modes of activation, deactivation or reformation. This term's programme consists of five online public-facing sessions (Weeks 1 and Weeks 7-10) and five in-person, student-facing sessions at Goldsmiths (Weeks 2-6) in which these agencies are unpacked in diversely situated research, writing, exhibition- and event-making contexts.
