Event overview
Adam Wagner will present his new book, "Emergency State", in conversation with the Head of the Law Department at Goldsmiths, Professor Dimitrios Giannoulopoulos.
It is tempting to forget what happened during the two-year COVID-19 state of emergency. But that would be a mistake.
Our democratic institutions, and our trust in the government’s ability to act fairly, were corroded because of the disconnect between what UK politicians announced and what the law actually said; mass confusion caused by unclear laws; the downgrading of Parliament to a glorified rubber stamp; the basic lack of accountability and scrutiny of those making vastly restrictive laws; while, behind the doors of Downing Street our leaders partied, flouting the very laws they were imposing on everyone else.
Adam Wagner, Visiting Professor in Law at Goldsmiths, will present his new book, "Emergency State", which explores these vital (for our liberal democracy) themes, and will be in conversation with the Head of the Law Department at Goldsmiths, Professor Dimitrios Giannoulopoulos.
All Goldsmiths students and staff are warmly welcome to attend, and we would also be delighted to see at the event, students from local schools as well as people from our local community and beyond. The Department of Law highly values engaging with the wider public in the context of our open talks on current developments.
