Goldsmiths Anthropology Seminar Series
Directors Rizky Rahadianto, Xiaolin Zhang and Izzy Morgan in conversation with Siobhán McGuirk.
Three filmmakers and recent graduates of the MA Visual Anthropology programme at Goldsmiths, University of London discuss their varied approaches to documentary film before screening work that explores queer and trans experience in Indonesia, China, Gibraltar and the UK.
The shorts encompass a range of cinematic styles while challenging conventions of ethnographic film. From desktop doc, to intimate character study, to fantastical reimaginings of representation, each suggests new avenues for participatory filmmaking. They also suggest new possibilities for, and the potential limitations of recasting the anthropologist as an ally. Strands of movement, migration, placemaking, identity, community and exile run through each film, and offer additional points of connection for the filmmakers to explore, in this in-depth rumination on queering the ethnographic lens.
