Event overview
A rehearsed reading of Noel Greig's Dear Love of Comrades - a play about Edward Carpenter and the birth of the Labour movement.
Produced in 1979 by Gay Sweatshop, a theatre company with many links to the Borough of Lewisham, the play further consolidated the company as one of the leading radical theatre groups of the time, and offered new, ‘queer’ perspectives on history and the socio-political environment.
The play is a study of Edward Carpenter, a pioneer for gay rights and socialism, the beginnings of the Labour movement and the ideas behind its creation. The reading will be followed by a Q&A with readers and members of the Gay Sweatshop.
This is a collaboration with Unfinished Histories, an organisation devoted to recording the history of alternative theatre, and is part of Lewisham Council's LGBTQ+ History Month programme.
