Bystander intervention in cases of non-consensual sharing of nude images: Individual, situational, and contextual facilitators and barriers
Abstract: The non-consensual sharing of nude or sexual images is an ever-growing problem within our society, and victims can experience harms to both physical and mental wellbeing. Current avenues for prevention focus mainly on the use of law and education, both of which have limitations. An additional avenue for prevention is bystander intervention. Research to date shows that many individuals have been a bystander of non-consensual sharing, but most do not intervene despite having the opportunity to do so. Therefore, an understanding of what facilitates and inhibits intervention in these contexts is a worthy endeavour. Guided by an ecological framework and using both experimental and survey methods, this work looked at individual, situational, and contextual facilitators and barriers of bystander intervention intent in cases of non-consensual sharing. The studies show that feelings of responsibility, previous victimisation experiences, bystander relationship with the victim, initial consent to take the image, and social norms towards intervention, all play a role in facilitating and inhibiting bystander intervention intent. Overall, the studies demonstrate the importance of a holistic understanding of bystander intervention, and have important implications for theory, practice, and future research. In particular, this work contributes to a growing knowledge base that can be used to develop policy papers and educational programmes aimed at encouraging greater bystander intervention, which ultimately, can help prevent and minimise the harm experienced by victims of non-consensual sharing.
