Event overview
With Matt Huber, Damien Gayle, Clare Farrell and more, chaired by Feyzi Ismail
Climate activism today is dominated by the direct action and single-issue protests organised by groups such as Just Stop Oil and Extinction Rebellion. These have had a significant impact in creating controversy in the media, raising the profile of the climate and ecological emergency in wider society, and bringing large numbers of people into the climate movement.
Important questions of strategy, however, are being posed by the wave of strike action across the country in multiple sectors, which reminds us that the climate crisis must be understood – and tackled – not only in relation to wider social, economic and political crises but the concerns of working people. Meanwhile, striking workers and their unions face the question of how to build a class politics in an era of existential ecological threat. What challenges and possibilities emerge from coinciding waves of worker militancy and climate action?
This seminar brings together trade unionists thinking about the climate emergency, climate activists wanting to support the labour movement and journalists reporting on climate protests, to consider how protest strategy can be developed more effectively. As the need for putting pressure on those in power intensifies, it is crucial we discuss how to bring together the labour and climate movements in order to take things into our own hands.
