Decentring English Language Teaching: From Rhetoric to Practice…and back!
Abstract: Dr. Darío Luis Banegas, University of Edinburgh
In this talk, I will problematize the notion (and initiative) of decentring English language teaching based on the work carried out by the Hornby Trust. In a nutshell, this is a process that seeks to empower teachers and other stakeholders to develop local, context-responsive, and sustainable pedagogies for English language education. This process seeks to recognise and maximise the professional knowledge individually and collectively created in non-hegemonic centres of power.
I will particularly discuss what it means, unpack its rationale, and offer cases of good practice. I will use this opportunity to make connections with two potent notions: teacher agency, and decolonising the curriculum. I will invite the audience to share good practices, insights, and concerns.
