History on Film: Framing Agnes (2022)
with Framing Agnes co-writer Morgan M Page
Framing Agnes (2022) brings to life case files from the archives of the UCLA gender clinic (USA) from the 1950s. A cast of trans actors confronts the legacy of a trans woman, Agnes, who is forced to choose between honesty and access to gender affirming medical care. Blending fiction and non-fiction, the film remembers trans lineages but also questions the frame through which trans history, lives, and (health)care are viewed.
Morgan M Page is a writer, historian, artist, and activist. With Chase Joynt, she is the co-writer of Framing Agnes. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2022, where it won two awards. Together, they also wrote the book Boys Don’t Cry (MQUP, 2022), a critical history of the 1999 film by Kimberly Peirce.
