Event overview
David Shenton talks with Adam Mars-Jones about Forty Lies and his career in cartoon and knitting
Is it too much to describe David Shenton as a living cultural treasure? His book Stanley and the Mask of Mystery, published in 1983, was the first full length queer graphic novel in the world (though the term ‘graphic novel’ might not even have been coined at the time), and he is honoured for that at conferences internationally. His work has appeared in practical every gay publication in the UK, plus the Guardian, Solicitors' Journal, Disability Now and Optician. He's always enjoyed making the same gag work in lightly varied forms for very different publications. He has taught art and literacy at Norwich Prison, Hackney College, and worked as a keeper in London Zoo, and is the founder and co-ordinator of the Norwich Men's Knitting Group. His own work in textiles includes the magnificent Pashmina of Verbal Abuse, into which he knitted every homophobic insult ever thrown at him.
His recent memoir in the form of a graphic novel, Forty Lies, is described as a work of Ipsedixitism, in other words “Because I Say So”. It includes a number of knitting patterns. David is a recent convert to Prym ergonomic knitting needles, and favours those between 3.5 and 5mm, well able to tackle four-ply.
