Event overview
The Role of Social Media in Promoting Khmer Traditional Wedding Music and Lakhon Bassac Theatre
Dr Francesca Billeri looks at the mediatisation of Khmer traditional ritual music and theatre genres, examining performances on TV and social media in the wider context of the political control exercised by the Cambodian government over culture and the media system in contemporary society.
Dr Billeri completed a PhD in Music at SOAS University of London in 2019, and has been conducting research in Cambodia for over a decade. More recently, she worked on the creation of an online digital sound archive of Khmer traditional music as a Postdoctoral Fellow at Sapienza University of Rome. Building on the research featured in this talk, Dr Billeri will publish her first research monograph with Bloomsbury’s “New Approaches to Sound, Music, and Media” series.
Music Research Series events Music Research Lectures are free and all are welcome.
The sessions bring together scholars, practitioners, and people working in music outside the university. They may include formal papers, panel discussions, conversations, or any other format that suits the research.
Attendance is strongly recommended for all postgraduate students (MA, MMus and PGR) in Music, as the events will help hone research skills, facilitate the creation of professional networks and help to consolidate the department’s postgraduate community. Undergraduates, researchers and visitors from across the college and the community are also most welcome to these public lectures.
