Aural Diverse Spatial Perception: From Paracusis to Panacusis Loci
Professor John Drever continues his incursion into the bastions of sonic practices, this time critiquing the audiological givens in spatial perception. Deviating from the standard auraltypical textbook’s positing of a perfect pair of calibrated symmetrical ears positioned at the sides of the cranium – a normative model that has been ineluctably inscribed into our audio technologies and the fabric of environments we have fashioned and inhabit, informing who gets to hear what: signal, noise, ambience – this talk will offer a fuller, more truthful, account of spatial hearing within the frame of the nascent discourse of aural diversity.
Prof Drever will also introduce the recently awarded Leverhulme Trust Aural Diversity Doctoral Research Hub between Goldsmiths and the University of Salford.
Music Research Lectures are free and all are welcome.
The Music Research Series invites researchers from across the country, and from within the department, to present and discuss their work.
The sessions bring together scholars, practitioners, and people working in music outside the university. They may include formal papers, panel discussions, conversations, or any other format that suits the research.
Attendance is strongly recommended for all postgraduate students (MA, MMus and PGR) in Music, as the events will help hone research skills, facilitate the creation of professional networks and help to consolidate the department’s postgraduate community. Undergraduates, researchers and visitors from across the college and the community are also most welcome to these public lectures.
Venue: Media Research Building (behind the College Green), 10, screen 2
